The functionality is slightly better than the previous solutions because it does not require a third-party app. Plus, the vaccination card you add is digitally signed, which means other apps can verify its authenticity. This can be useful, for example, if an airline you are traveling with wants to instantly check your vaccination status.
Many states and suppliers support this process, including Walgreens and Walmart. Here is a full listing. Below are sample instructions for the State of California.
First, make sure your iPhone is updated to iOS 15.1. Go to Settings> General> Software Update and follow the steps to update your phone.
Then go to California’s COVID-19 Vaccine Digital File portal. Fill out the form and you will receive an SMS in a few seconds with a link to your digital QR code and your vaccination record. During this process you will need to create a 4 digit PIN code. It’s a good idea to write these numbers down so you don’t forget them. You will need it for the next step.
Once the text arrives on your phone, click on the link and enter your 4-digit PIN code. This will take you to a website with a QR code containing your SMART Health Card. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you should see a button that says âAdd to Apple Wallet & Healthâ.
Tap this button to store your vaccination record in Apple Health and Apple Wallet.
Once registered, you can access your digital vaccination record in several ways. You can open the Apple Wallet app and scroll down until you see âImmunization Cardâ. Tap to view it in full screen.
Alternatively, and the fastest way to access it, is to double-click the side button on your iPhone. This will instantly bring up Apple Wallet cards. Tap the stack of cards at the bottom of the screen to view your vaccination card.
Pro tip: You can rearrange the order of cards in Apple Wallet by long-pressing the top of a card and dragging it up or down.
