Rumor: With a free software update, Ecobee’s SmartThermostat now supports “Hey Siri”

HomePod or HomePod mini users can use voice commands to control the SmartThermostat for tasks like adjusting the temperature and sending Intercom messages. To ensure privacy and security, the thermostat transmits requests through a HomePod or HomePod mini connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The Home app on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac can also be used to manage the temperature.

For example, if you say “Hey Siri, unlock the front door,” the Ecobee SmartThermostat can pick up your request, send it to the HomePod mini in another room, where the command is finally executed.

As Apple announced at WWDC, there’s an important caveat regarding Siri support on third-party devices: you’ll need to have a HomePod mini on the same network as your Ecobee. This is because when you use “Hey Siri” and make a request via the Ecobee, the request is routed over your network and via the HomePod mini.

Even further, as the Verge noted, this update also turns your Ecobee SmartThermostat into an AirPlay 2 target. Of course, the SmartThermostat doesn’t have the best speakers in the world, but it does allow you to play from music and podcasts on the device and include them in multi-room setups with other AirPlay-enabled devices.

This new integration brings that promise to life by opening up new ways for our customers to control their homes with our SmartThermostat.

We’re excited that customers can talk to Siri directly from ecobee’s SmartThermostat with voice control, giving Apple customers a smoother whole-home experience. With every evolution of our products, we hope to improve the lives of our customers, with devices that bring even more comfort and convenience to everyday life.

Ecobee says the update is rolling out to SmartThermostat with voice control models and will affect all users over the coming weeks. You will need a HomePod mini running software version 15 and for your SmartThermostat to be on firmware

Today ecobee announced that Siri is coming to the Voice-Activated SmartThermostat with a free software update. Customers will be able to use Apple’s smart assistant to say “Hey Siri” to their ecobee smart thermostat and have hands-free help with setting the temperature, sending an intercom message, and more. The software update is now starting to roll out and will be available over the next few weeks to all ecobee SmartThermostat customers.
