Oculus Quest stuck on ‘Software update required’ screen for some
Oculus Quest is the virtual reality (VR) headset from Meta (formerly Facebook). These devices are characterized by the integration of all the necessary hardware to enjoy the experience.
Meta is currently working on its next big release: the Meta Quest Pro. This will mark its full commitment to standalone VR headsets following the discontinuation of the Oculus Rift which required connection to a PC.
However, some Oculus Quest users (1 and 2) are currently receiving a “Software update required” error that prevents them from using or setting up their devices.
The Oculus Quest “Software update required” error
Oculus Quest VR headsets receive constant updates through the Oculus/Meta app. Often these updates are mandatory, which means that you will not be able to use the device if you do not install them.
But a problem prevents the devices from detecting the latest available update. Affected Oculus Quest users are unable to access their games and apps by getting stuck on the “Software update required” screen.
Oculus not updating
My oculus is not updating. I’m in the system update menu and click update, it shows the loading symbol and does it for a while then goes back to showing the update button. It does or shows the update download. But it stops as soon as I remove the helmet.
Need to perform system update but no update available
I just moved to college and set my quest 2 on wifi. I had no problems before that. Quest 2 requires a system update to connect, but the settings will not allow a system update.
Users are also unable to bind controllers due to an issue
The issue isn’t just preventing existing Oculus Quest users from accessing their content. New users are also unable to configure their devices and even bind controllers.
Initial setup with new controllers
I recently purchased a Quest 2. Both controllers were damaged beyond use (dog). Now I’m trying to complete the initial setup with controllers that I can’t pair through the app because it just says it needs to update the software.
Official recognition and some workarounds
Fortunately, the Meta team is aware of the issue and working on a fix, but there is no ETA yet.
Hi there! This is an ongoing issue that many of our users are having with the code error. Currently, our engineering team is working diligently to find a solution to this problem. We look forward to providing an update on this fix as soon as possible.
In the meantime, there are workarounds you can try. If you are facing the problem that prevents you from accessing your content, you can follow this procedure:
Alternatively, you can try the following:
Hi guys! So I’ve seen a few people getting this error (saying your headset needs to be updated during initial setup) since Meta Accounts rolled out. What seems to work here is factory reset the headset and then start the setup again.
If the issue is preventing you from linking the controllers to the Oculus Quest, this link has some troubleshooting steps you can try.
Also, the following video can help you configure your controllers if you have any problems.
We will update this story once new related events occur.
