Following the recent attack on the Abuja-Kaduna railway line which led to the suspension of service by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), the federal government committed to deploying a digital security system to prevent a future event.

Minister of Transport, Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, made the disclosure during an unscheduled assessment tour of the rail service to determine the level of damage to the tracks caused by bandits with explosives.

He further revealed that the ministry would resubmit the digital security system proposal to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting to get approval and proceed with the installation.

The minister explained that the essence of the digital security system is to let the ministry know when there is an impact on the rail, reassured Nigerians that there will be improved security on the Abuja-Kaduna road.

“We want to assure the public that beyond the physical presence of the police and the military along this track, we will have a rail bus to patrol regularly so that we can see what is happening even before the train does take off, and that will be the end. -to finish.

“Other than that, there have been no safety issues on this track. What this did to us was that we were going to speed up the procurement process for the digital security system that we planned to put in place. It went to cabinet two weeks ago and it was returned. So we’re going to bring it back to cabinet to make sure we get approval for the installation.

“The essence of the digital security system is to let us know when there is an impact on the rail to prevent this kind of attack. We will involve the police so that they are here before the installation of the digital installation, ”he said.

The former governor of Rivers State also noted that although he was unhappy with the attack, it nevertheless showed that Nigerian engineers are now capable of building their own railroad.

“I’m not happy that the security breach happened, but what it did was show that we really have the ability to fix our rail. The essence of this is to make sure that by the time the Chinese leave, we should start the gradual process of building our own railroad. The repair was carried out by our own Nigerian engineers in record time and by tomorrow (Saturday) we will be running the first train, ”he promised.

Likewise, NRA chief executive Fidet Okhiria noted that the NRC will run more trains in the corridor in order to ward off vandals.

“It is better to run more trains because running more trains would not give people the opportunity to tamper / interfere with the tracks, as a train went from Abuja to Kaduna in less than 30 minutes when the explosions started. been executed and planted.

“If we have all the trains on the tracks, people would have to work really hard to be able to plant explosives.

“So on Saturday we are doing four trips to be able to go from Abuja to Kaduna and balance the train while we are working on the locomotive that has been affected, after fixing the locomotive we would do our usual ten trips”, he said. -he adds. he disclosed.
